Privacy Policy

Flux Open Home builds software that connects directly to the systems you already own. Our apps are designed to be private by default: we do not operate a cloud service that sits between you and your devices, we do not require an account, and we do not collect, track, or sell your personal data.

This Privacy Policy explains how the Flux Open Home applications — including Flux (our Home Assistant and Apple Home dashboard for iPhone, iPad, and Apple TV) and the Flux Controller app — handle information. By using our apps, you agree to this policy.

1. The short version

  • No account required. You connect the app straight to your own Home Assistant and, optionally, your own Apple Home.
  • No analytics, no tracking, no advertising. We do not embed third-party trackers or ad SDKs.
  • Nothing leaves your device automatically. Your dashboards, entities, camera feeds, calendars, music, and settings stay on your device, your Home Assistant, and — only if you choose — your own private Apple iCloud. The one exception is feedback you deliberately send us through the in-app form (see §6) — that, and only that, goes to a Flux Open Home server.
  • Your credentials stay with you, stored in the iOS Keychain and, if you enable sync, in your private iCloud — never on a Flux server. This includes any Plex token or NAS sign-in you add.

2. Information we collect

In normal use the app does not collect personal information and sends nothing to Flux Open Home servers. There is no Flux Open Home account. The only time anything is sent to us is when you choose to submit feedback through the in-app form — described in §6, "Feedback you send us." Otherwise:

  • Connection details — the address (URL) of your Home Assistant and your access token are stored locally in the device's encrypted Keychain so the app can connect. If you enable iCloud sync (see §5), the connection may also be stored in your own private iCloud database so your other devices — for example, your Apple TV — can configure themselves automatically. In all cases it is governed by Apple's Privacy Policy and is never transmitted to us.
  • Dashboards & preferences — the layouts, widgets, floor plans, automations, and settings you create are stored on your device, and may sync across your own devices through your private iCloud account if you enable it. We have no access to any of it.
  • Device & entity data — entity states, sensor history, camera streams, and similar information are fetched directly from your Home Assistant and/or Apple Home for display, and are not routed through or stored by us.

3. How the app connects

The app communicates with your Home Assistant over the connection you configure — your local network, or a remote connection such as Home Assistant Cloud (Nabu Casa) or your own reverse proxy. That traffic flows between your device and your Home Assistant only. Flux Open Home is not a party to it. When you control Apple Home accessories, that happens through Apple's HomeKit framework on your device and your home hubs, not through us.

4. Apple features the app integrates with

Flux is built natively for Apple platforms and can use the following system features. Each is optional, requested only when you use the related feature, and processed on your device or directly between you and the relevant service — never collected by Flux Open Home.

Apple Home (HomeKit)

With your permission, Flux reads and controls your Apple Home accessories so you can show and operate them on your dashboards and in automations alongside Home Assistant. Information obtained through HomeKit is used only to provide these home-automation features on your device. It is never used for advertising or data-mining, and it is never shared with us or any third party.

Location

If you create geofence (location-based) automations, Flux uses your location — including in the background, with your permission — to trigger those automations when you arrive at or leave the places you choose. Location is also used to retrieve local conditions for the Apple Weather feature (see below). Your location is processed on your device and to provide these features only; it is not collected, stored, or sold by us.

Apple Weather (WeatherKit)

The weather card can show forecasts from Apple Weather. To do so, your device sends your chosen location to Apple's WeatherKit service to return the forecast, governed by Apple's privacy terms. Weather data provided by Apple Weather.

Apple Music

The media widget can play Apple Music using the account you are already signed in with on your device, and lets you search, browse, and control playback (including to AirPlay 2 speakers you choose). This uses Apple's MusicKit framework and is subject to Apple's privacy policy and Apple Media Services terms. Flux does not receive your listening history or library.

Calendar

With your permission, the calendar widget can display your Apple Calendar events alongside your Home Assistant calendars, and can add events you create. Calendar data is read and written on your device only and is not sent to us.

Microphone & speech recognition

If you choose to add a calendar event by voice, Flux uses the microphone and Apple's speech-recognition to transcribe what you say. Depending on your device, this transcription may be performed by Apple and is subject to Apple's privacy terms. Audio is used only to create the event you dictate and is not retained or sent to Flux.

Camera

The camera is used only to scan your Apple TV's pairing QR code and, if you explicitly enable it, to wake a wall-mounted kiosk screen when you approach. Nothing from the camera is recorded, stored, or transmitted. Camera feeds shown in the app are streamed from your Home Assistant or Apple Home, not captured by the device camera.

Local network

Flux uses the local network to discover and reach your Home Assistant (via Bonjour) and to send your dashboards to your Apple TV over Wi-Fi. The Apple TV sync stays on your local network and is encrypted; it is not sent through any Flux server.

5. Media sources you connect (Home Assistant, Plex, NAS)

The media widget can play from sources you connect. In every case the connection is made directly from your device to that source — Flux Open Home is not in the path and receives none of it.

  • Home Assistant media — your server's media library is browsed and played through your own Home Assistant connection.
  • Plex — if you sign in, the linking step uses Plex's own service (plex.tv) and the resulting access token is stored only in your device's Keychain. Browsing and playback happen directly between your device and your Plex server, governed by Plex's privacy policy. Flux does not receive your Plex library or viewing history.
  • Network storage (NAS) — you can add an SMB file server discovered on your local network. Its address and username are stored on your device and the password in the Keychain; files are read directly from your NAS over your local network and played on your device. Nothing about your NAS or its contents is sent to us.

6. Feedback you send us

Flux includes an optional in-app form for feature requests and bug reports. It is never sent automatically — only when you fill it out and tap Send. When you do, the following is transmitted to a Flux Open Home server and stored so we can read, respond to, and act on it:

  • what you write (your feature request or bug description);
  • a screenshot, only if you choose to attach one;
  • your name and/or email, only if you provide them — you may instead submit anonymously;
  • basic technical context to help us reproduce issues: the app version and build, your device type (e.g. iPhone, iPad, or Apple TV), and OS version;
  • the IP address of the request, recorded in standard server logs.

We use this solely to improve Flux and to follow up with you if you left contact details. We do not sell it, share it for advertising, or use it to build a profile, and if you submit anonymously we have no way to identify you. To request deletion of feedback you've sent, contact us (§14).

7. iCloud sync

If you enable it, Flux can sync your dashboards, settings, and Home Assistant connection across your own Apple devices using Apple's iCloud (CloudKit) in your private database. This data is stored in your personal iCloud account and is governed by Apple's Privacy Policy. Flux Open Home cannot read it. You can turn sync off in the app's settings at any time.

8. Notifications

If you enable alerts, push delivery is handled through Apple's notification service and/or your own Home Assistant. We do not maintain a notification server that profiles you.

9. Permissions the app may request

You will only be asked for a permission when you use the feature that needs it, and you can change or revoke any of them at any time in the iOS or tvOS Settings app:

  • Apple Home (HomeKit) — to show and control your Apple Home accessories.
  • Location (including background) — for geofence automations and Apple Weather.
  • Local Network — to discover your Home Assistant, find a NAS on your network, and sync to your Apple TV.
  • Calendar — to display and add Apple Calendar events.
  • Apple Music — to play and control music from your subscription.
  • Photos — only if you choose a screenshot from your library to attach to feedback.
  • Camera — to scan a pairing QR code and (optionally) wake a kiosk screen.
  • Microphone & Speech Recognition — to add calendar events by voice.
  • Notifications (optional) — to deliver alerts you enable.

10. Third-party services

We do not share your information with third parties, and the app includes no advertising networks or analytics services. Some optional features connect your device directly to Apple services (HomeKit, WeatherKit, Apple Music, iCloud, speech recognition), which are governed by Apple's own privacy terms. If you use Plex, your device connects directly to Plex (plex.tv for sign-in, then your own Plex server), governed by Plex's privacy policy. A NAS you add is reached directly over your local network. Any other external content you add (for example, a camera feed URL or a map tile) is requested directly by your device from the source you specify. The only data that reaches a Flux Open Home server is feedback you choose to submit (§6).

11. Data security

Sensitive values such as your Home Assistant token, Plex token, and NAS password are stored using Apple's Keychain, and any iCloud sync uses your private, encrypted iCloud database. The only personal data we hold is the feedback you choose to submit (§6); it is stored on our server to let us respond and improve the app, kept no longer than needed, and never sold. Everything else stays on your device, your Home Assistant, and your own iCloud — there is no broader Flux Open Home database of your activity to be breached. You remain in control of your Home Assistant, your Apple Home, and their own security.

12. Children's privacy

Our apps are not directed to children under 13 and do not knowingly collect personal information from them.

13. Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Material changes will be reflected here with an updated "Last updated" date. Continued use of the apps after a change constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
